Water Temp: 82 - 85°F
Air Temp: 77 - 82 °F
Current: Slight to modest depending on the site

NOTE: We are NOT offering our world famous 'Rent-A-Buddy or Rent-A-Mentor' program but we can hire a limited number of private guide to help you if your diving skills are not quite at the minimum requested. *USAT Liberty was a United States Army cargo ship torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-66 in January 1942 and beached on the island of Bali, Indonesia. She had been built as a Design 1037 ship for the United States Shipping Board in World War I and had served in the United States Navy in that war as animal transport USS Liberty (ID-3461). She was also notable as the first ship constructed at Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny, New Jersey. In 1963 a volcanic eruption moved the ship off the beach, and Liberty's wreck is now one of the most popular and iconic dive sites in Bali.

Diving & Itinerary:
The alamBatu house reef, situated directly off the resort, is a wonderful and mostly untouched reef of over 800 meters. The coral diversity varies from soft corals, black corals, table corals and gorgonians up to 2 meters in diameter. The corals shelter a fantastic underwater world with many schools of fish (including juvenile barracudas, snappers), reef sharks, sea horses, harlequin shrimps and other critters.
With a bit of luck you can also see dolphins, pilot whales and ocean sunfish passing by.
The USS Liberty has put north Bali - specifically, the small village of Tulamben - firmly on the scuba diving map. Correctly named the USAT Liberty, this site attracts excited divers from far and wide, all drawn by the promise of exploring one of Indonesia's best and most accessible shipwrecks.
The USS Liberty is rightly considered one of the best wreck dives in the entire world, and it's surprisingly accessible. Today, this vessel lies roughly 40-metres from the shore, with its bow pointing approximately due north. At its shallowest point, the wreck is roughly three-metres deep or 12ft, whilst the deepest sections lie at almost 30-metres or 97ft, where parts of the super structure and debris can be found scattered on the sandy bottom. Some sections of the vessel's port side and hull have been buried by sand in the shallows but the vertical remains of what was the Liberty's deck and superstructure, as well as parts of the engine room, hold and bow section can all be explored. In fact, whilst the wreck is 'only' 120-metres long or over 360ft, the site can be explored again and again as there is so much to see, particularly in terms of the abundant encrusting life and diversity of fish.
The rudder is now missing but divers can swim through a gap where it used to be, then along the hull past a series of portholes and towards the remains of the Liberty's upper decks. At around 25-metres or 82 ft lies some fallen superstructure with the stern gun still in place. Heading north, divers swim past a winch with steel cables, a collapsed bulkhead and the remains of the engine room where the shape of boilers and gears can still be made out beneath the coral and corrosion. Further still along the deeper section of the wreck lies more debris scattered on the sandy bottom at around 30-metres or 100ft, plenty of wreckage with some incredible soft coral and even toilets and showers which can be investigated.
Divers then reach the break in the hull where large metal plates lie scattered on the bottom. At the bow section beyond the split, there are several swim-throughs and overhangs beneath the remains of more superstructure and several booms. These are all filled with beautiful soft corals, gorgonian fans and big tubastrea colonies. On the foredeck the shape of the gun can still be made out at around 20-metres or 65ft , well hidden beneath a barrel sponge and plenty of soft corals.
At the end of the wreck, the anchor chain can be seen lying on the sand at 30metres or or 100ft. From this point, it is time to turn towards the shore and back around the shallow side of the bow section. Here the hull has almost completely disappeared beneath a heavy covering of hard corals and sponges that hide much of the original surface. Divers then pass back across the break and can enter the hold, a 'room' filled with vertical columns – perfect for shooting natural light silhouettes of divers as they explore the large area. From here divers normally swim back towards the stern across the top of the wreck or cross to the shore side and swim along the hull. Both areas have prolific life with big black coral bushes, soft corals and hard corals and an incredible amount of fish life.
For most visitors, it isn't the remains of the wreck itself that is the big attraction. Rather, it is the diversity of life that has been attracted to the site. Biologist estimate that over 400 species of fish make their home on the Liberty, with still more pelagic species as passing visitors – a huge number for such a small site. The combination of deep water close by, currents that provide a steady supply of food and the variety of different habitats around the area, means that everything from the tiniest pygmy seahorse, to giants such as Mola Mola have all been seen on the Liberty. And as well as actual diversity, it is the sheer numbers of fish that makes the site stand out from pretty much any other in Bali.
Once divers have had their fill of the fish life, they can then start to appreciate the fact that the species diversity continues with invertebrates such as nudibranchs and crustaceans. Pretty much anywhere on the wreck is worth searching for smaller macro subjects, but it is at night that a hunt for strange crustaceans really pays off. A night dive on the Liberty is a completely different experience from a day dive, and possibly ranks as one of the best night dives in Indonesia! The hard corals that cover the wreck in many areas extend their polyps to feed in the currents, giving the wreck a decidedly 'bushy' appearance.

- You read all the trip details before booking and commit to being responsible for 'post trip booking follow up' via use of our TRIP PM, FORUM DISCUSSIONS and in some cases emails. You commit to ask us how to use these tools if uncertain and commit to keeping your premier membership dues current and email on file current so we can contact you. Our tools require your dues and email to be current to work. They also require that you log into the PM system from time to time as the emailed courtesy copies are not reliable nor do they transmit pictures or embedded documents. Any delays/expenses/issues due to lack of trip information will be borne by the trip goer and NOT SingleDivers.com as we regularly and routinely use these tools to communicate extensively with you. If you are not hearing from us it means you are not using the tools we have in place or are experiencing technical issues so YOU MUST. Email trips@singledivers.com for help.
- You have read the EXPERIENCE REQUIRED & TRAINING/WORKSHOPS information in the online trip details to ensure that you are able to safely and comfortably meet the requirements of the trip. Please contact to further discuss any questions you have about attending one of our trips. We often accept students who would not otherwise meet the stated trip requirements because they are taking a class that will then enable them to meet the trip specifications and they will be diving with an instructor or dive master during the dives.
- We require Dive Insurance for all dives and trips. Please see the online trip details under INSURANCE for more information.
- We NOW require Trip Insurance due to post covid travel instability. We now have you make an 'Insurance Declaration' during the booking process allowing you to tell us if you have insurance already that covers this trip, or you will buy insurance to cover this trip or you will 'self insure' accepting all risks including loss of all monies paid and you will hold Kamala Shadduck, and SingleDivers.com's associates, partners, suppliers, volunteers and/or employees harmless.
- In the event of cancellation, your trip insurance will be your first line of defense. Secondary remedies include some rights afforded to you based upon when you have to cancel your trip in writing. Please see THIS link for full additional trip cancellation details.
- Please read THIS link for our Guaranteed Double Occupancy Policy, Rooming Policies, Payment Terms, the "Ex" Rule etc
